Men-to-be and Reservations
A young man-to-be resentfully asked his father “Why should I? Why should I put up with the reservations at all? Why should students from SC & STs get better colleges than us even though they are less-talented than me?”
His mother chipped in too “Yes.... I have to put up with less merited and totally dumb nuts on a day-to-day basis. Why should this happen at all?”
The man of the house, his father, looked at them coolly in the eye “Do you know how dangerous the power of ridicule is? You dont even clean your table after you have eaten your food; And have you ever wondered how humiliating it is for a person to go to every house to collect the excreta of others in a bucket, carry it on his head walking all the way to the end of the village and throw it there? And do you understand the stigma that they go through for it...?
Ever wondered how hurt will a kid be when his classmates wont sit with him, wont touch him, wont talk to him and humiliate him for being the son of a faeces cleaner every day? Do you think he would ever go back to school after facing this on the first day of his school?
Do you think that kid will ever be able to lead a normal life? Do you understand the stigma that humiliation has left on that kid or the the havoc it can play on a small kids life…?”
Only silence & tears met him.

will def read that book sometime soon. my intention of this post is definitely not my stand against/for reservations.
Its just that whenever i think of reservations, inevitably this image has stuck with me. I definitely dont think reservations are an answer to this never-ending debate. they are totally out-date imvho.

i was going to start my comment with 'Oh puhleez'.. but then I read that you do not agree with reservations after all..
As far as I can see, reservations like almost all other laws in the land.. help only the already powerful. Ever heard of a story of a SC/ST who was educated because of reservations?

im not on the end saying that the reservations have no use at all ... on the contrary some very deserving people could get in because of them, but thats a miniscule.but yes, they havent helped as much as they were supposed to.
as for the thing about laws for the rich, its actually that complexities of the law that make it more easy for the rich to get around them. its of course the implementors that facilitate this bringning in this digital divide of law!

And about reservations and quota systems, I think it should be only need based and not caste based, but again there is no fool proof way to implement that thing..

completely agree on the need-based, but only partially, as you said there is no way we can know if there is really a 'need'!
migration to wordpress is definitely there, but im just thinking about it but the problem is migration also means having to see a transparent system for your users...

As for Reservations - there is merit in the argument basing itself on "As you sow, so shall you reap" when it concerns
individuals - but - whether there is merit in the argument when it is a matter of dealing with social groups? - Think.
